What is rope access?

Rope access is a way of working at height where trained technicians descend, ascend and move across a building on two independent ropes, a working line and a backup safety line, each attached to certified anchors. It is the same system used on high-rise towers, bridges and offshore platforms around the world.

For building owners it means one simple thing: the work gets done where it’s needed, without first building a structure to stand on. Technicians rig from the roof in the morning, complete the task, and de-rig at the end of the day. Nothing stays on your building overnight.

How a rope access job runs

  1. Inspect and quote. We assess the building, the anchors and what the job actually needs, and tell you straight if rope access isn’t the right method.
  2. Plan and notify. Safe work method statements, rescue plan, exclusion zones and resident notices are prepared before we start.
  3. Rig and work. Technicians rig from certified anchors and work drop by drop across the elevation.
  4. Report and sign off. You receive a clear close-out with photos of the completed works and any issues we found along the way.

When scaffold is still the better choice

Rope access is the right tool for most inspection, cleaning, painting, sealing, repair and installation work. For full re-cladding, heavy structural works across a whole elevation or long multi-trade programmes, scaffold or a mast climber can make more sense. We’ll tell you honestly, and often use rope access to inspect first, so you only scaffold what genuinely needs it. Read: some buildings shouldn’t have scaffold

Is rope access safe?

Yes. IRATA rope access uses two independent ropes on separate certified anchors, so a single failure cannot cause a fall. Technicians are trained and assessed to IRATA levels, work in pairs, and every job has a rescue plan and ground exclusion zones.

Does rope access cost less than scaffolding?

On most maintenance jobs, yes. There’s no scaffold to design, hire, erect, rent and dismantle, so you pay for the work rather than the structure. Every building is different, so we quote each job on its merits.

What if our building doesn’t have roof anchors?

We can design, install and certify anchors as a separate job, or use alternative rigging where it is safe to do so. See anchor installation & certification.

Will residents be disturbed?

Far less than with scaffold. Residents are notified in advance, a technician passes each window only briefly, and nothing is left on the building overnight.

Do you work across all of Sydney?
