Emergency building repairs: the first 24 hours

The checklist

1. Make people safe. Cordon off areas below loose materials; call emergency services if there’s immediate danger.
2. Stop the water. Isolate water supplies if a pipe has burst; clear blocked outlets if safe to do so.
3. Document everything. Photos and videos with times. They’re useful for insurance and repairs.
4. Call a contractor who can reach it. Damage at height often needs rope access for a fast make-safe.
5. Notify. Your strata manager, insurer and affected residents or tenants.
6. Temporary protection. Tarps, sealing and barriers to prevent further damage.
7. Plan the permanent fix once the building is safe and dry.
